About the Organization

Federal Medical Centre,Umuahia, AbiaState, Nigeria is a 460-bed tertiary hospital and one of the leading health care providers in south eastern Nigeria. The facility is centrally located and readily accessible from Enugu, Imo, Rivers, Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom and Anambra States. The hospital clients and patients are drawn from all over the country but predominantly from the south-east and south-south part of the country.The facility currently boasts of staff strength of 1300, including 71 consultants in 26 discipline areas. The discipline areas include among others, internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, community medicine and family medicine. There is also a vibrant residency training and research program in place in the institution. 

Current Mission

The mission of the hospital, as the foremost Federal Medical Centre, is to provide specialized and comprehensive health care services to our clients using modern equipment, research and training through highly motivated manpower operating in a friendly and conducive environment that reflects our antecedent as a mission hospital. 


Proposed New Mission

Our mission is to ensure that every Nigerian has access to specialized and comprehensive evidence-based health care services provided by highly motivated manpower using modern equipment, complemented by research and training in an atmosphere of managerial excellence. 


Problem Area

Non-compliance of obstetric care providers to standard patient safety practices in Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) services. 


Program Goal Statement

To reduce maternal mortality from obstetric emergencies in FMC, Umuahia by strengthening EmOC services. 


Long Term Outcome Smart Objective

To reduce number of women dying from obstetricemergencies at FMC, Umuahia by 50% by 2017 


Measure

To develop/adapt SOPs for management of obstetric emergencies at FMC, Umuahia in 2 months.
