SMART Objective for Goal 1:

Increase the the utilization of contraceptives among women age 15-49yrs from 11.4% to 40% in the project area of Bawku by 2015.

Goal 2:

Improve the use of skilled attendants for delivery

SMART Objective for Goal 2:

Increased skilled delivery from 73% to 95% in the Project area of Bolgatanga by 2015

Critical Problems or Issues to Address

  • 24 hr availability of midwives to conduct deliveries
  • Socio-cultural barriers to using health facilities for delivery
  • Financial barriers to using health facilities for delivery
  • Non availabilty of refferal services to higher levels

GOAL:

Improve the use of Skilled attendants for Delivery

OBJECTIVE

Increased skilled deliveries from 73% to 95% in the project area of Bolgatanga by 2015.

Strategic Options:

Develop at least two potential strategic options to achieve your goal and objective (you will select one of these strategic options as your CHIP):

Strategic option 1:

EXPANDING PHYSICAL ACCESS TO MATERNAL HEALTH SERVICES

1. Provision of 24 hour delivery services in rural clinics:

Rural areas in the Upper East Region of Ghana are usually hard to reach and lack social ameneties. These difficult conditions make it difficult to attract and retain critical staff like midwives. Most of these staff who pick up posting in these areas stay partially in these communities, therefore compromising the availability of 24 hour delivery services.

2. Community Sensitization and Participation

Socio- cultural barriers also influence the the utilisation of skilled attendants for delivery, as delivery is considered sacred and is associated with some beliefs and cultural rites which make it difficult for them to deliver at the clinic. This situation is further compounded with low literacy rates which makes it difficult for the pouplation to understand and utilise health messages. Finally, the decision makers on where a woman can deliver is the landlords/husbands, who are old and mostly not present at community sensitization forums.

Strategic option 2:

POLICY INFLUENCING

This strategy targets lower level decision makers at the Region, Districts and Sub-districts to influence decisions, that will involve community members in planning, implementation and monitoring of programs including efficient feedback mechanism.

EXPANDING PHYSICAL ACCESS TO MATERNAL HEALTH SERVICES

3E. ROI for CHIP

What measures can you track to calculate your CHIP's Return on Investment (ROI)? For example, costs of project vs. revenue gained as a result of implementation, costs of CHIP vs. cost savings to your organization or system.
