About the Organization
The UVRI engages in health research pertaining to human infections and disease processes associated with or linked to viral etiology and provides expert advice, enables partnerships and communication and serves as a center for training and education.
UVRI, an agency for environmental health and protection, is always engages in emergency preparedness. We are home to several national and international reference and specialized testing laboratories. We are involved in regulation and policy development and continuous quality improvement and performs as a disease prevention, control and epidemiology center
The Institute’s programmatic activities currently comprise of the following areas:
- Basic research
- Applied research (intervention, diagnostics, clinical, operational)
- Social/economic research
- Capacity building through infrastructure and human resource development
- Advice for regulation, policy development and quality improvement
- Innovation

To conduct scientific investigations on viral and other communicable diseases so as to contribute to knowledge, policy, practice and build capacity while promoting institutional sustainability.

To conduct scientific investigations on viral and other communicable diseases so as to contribute to knowledge, policy, practice and build national diagnostic capacity while promoting institutional sustainability.

To Improve the quality of HIV rapid testing by June 2016
Objective
Sixty percent (60%) of the mapped laboratories enrolled in HIV External Quality Assurance and passing HIV rapid testing by June 2016
