About the Organization

The School of Midwifery Makeni (SOMM) was established by Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) in 2010 to train competent midwives to address the gross shortage of midwives, who will work autonomously to improve rural maternity care in Sierra Leone. The School of Midwifery Makeni is under the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) but is managed as an autonomous unit with its own staff directly supervised by a management board. The School of Midwifery Makeni (SOMM) was established by Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) in 2010 to train competent midwives to address the gross shortage of midwives, who will work autonomously to improve rural maternity care in Sierra Leone. Bombali district where SOMM is located has a high prevalence of teenage pregnancy. The school runs a practicing maternity clinic which provides reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health services (RMNCH) to the Masuba community and its environs. These services are mainly provided by midwives and other health care providers. The district health management team (DHMT) supervises the clinic. Student midwives are posted to this clinic during their clinical placement to have a real life experience after gaining confidence of practice in the skills laboratory. There is an increase rate of teenage pregnant girls attending the clinic most of whom are accompanied by their teenage spouses. There is no separate facility for their care, as all pregnant women regardless of their age are placed in one waiting room for antenatal care. There is no adolescent and youth friendly services in the clinic and its environ. SOMM seeks to provide an appropriate center for adolescent and youths.
