About The Organization

Ethiopian Midwives association was established in the year 1992. EMwA is registered recently under the new civil society organization law in Ethiopia .It is registered and licensed by Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Charities and Societies Agency as an Ethiopian Society in accordance with the Charities and Societies proclamation No.621/2009 with a certificate no of 1037 as it has been issued on October 13/2014. Currently the organization has 4500 registered members. The organization is contributing its part in reducing maternal and child mortality and improving the quality of MNCH services as a primary component of sexual and reproductive health. The Ethiopian Midwives Association; as one of the more than 116 autonomous professional members of ICM (international council of midwives); is the only professional association for midwifery in Ethiopia. EMwA works to improve child and maternal health outcomes by advocating for the advancement of midwifery services. EMwA promotes midwifery as a career choice, works with government to improve the status of the profession, and provides ongoing training and resources to Ethiopian midwives.

Since its establishment the organization has been carrying out different activities that benefit midwives and community at grassroots level. The intervention areas of the association are promotion of safe and clean delivery, prevention of obstetric complications, promoting family planning methods, assuring women’s reproductive health rights and prevention of harmful traditional practices.

Current Mission

EMwA is a professional association of Ethiopian midwives established to promote and enhance the expansion, performance and status of Midwifery profession through adapting quality and evidence based practices; adhering to the code of Ethics; and empowering the professionals to reduce maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality, Improving youth sexual & reproductive health in Ethiopia.

Program Goal Statement

The overall goal of this innovative project is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality by increasing demand and optimizing the use of quality RMNH services, particularly skilled birth attendants, family planning services, and adolescent & youth sexual reproductive health (AYSRH) service
