About Uganda Heart Institute (UHI)

Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) is a super-specialized, public, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Government of Uganda. It is a component of Mulago National Referral Hospital Complex.

UHI is the leading provider of cardiovascular services in Uganda with the capacity to diagnose, treat, and manage heart diseases, including birth abnormalities, infections, heart attacks, and heart surgery. Its mandate also includes the prevention of heart disease, training and carrying out research related activities.

Current Mission

MISSION: The Uganda Heart Institute exists to serve as a center of excellence for the provision of comprehensive medical services to patients with cardiovascular and thoracic diseases and to offer opportunity for research and training in cardiovascular and thoracic medicine at an affordable cost so as to facilitate service delivery and enable continuous development of Cardiac Services.

Proposed New Mission

Same as above

GAP Analysis

Description Of Current State Description Of Desired Future State
1. Hypertension is the driver of the burden of cardiovascular disease. It is highly prevalent in the catchment area of the Uganda Heart Institute (25%). There are low levels of diagnosis but most importantly, most patients that are put on antihypertensive drugs (87.4%) are not controlled. This translates into a high burden to "target organ damage" which strains the resources of institute and translates into high morbidity and mortality 1. Improved control of hypertension to reduce morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease.
2. Control should be at least 50%
High morbidity and mortality from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) due to late referral of patients for appropriate treatment at the Uganda Heart Institute occasioned by inadequate awareness about the symptoms and emergency care of heart attack among the healthcare workers. Reduced morbidity and mortality from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) resulting from early referral of patients with heart attack for appropriate treatment at the Uganda Heart Institute due to improved knowledge about symptoms and emergency care of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) among the healthcare workers.
Poor delivery of health services due to frequent stock outs. Improved delivery of health services due to improved stocking.

Project Selection

Selected Problem Area Primary Focus Area Description of Your Solution
Your CHIP
High morbidity and mortality from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) due to late referral of patients with heart attack for appropriate treatment at the Uganda Heart Institute occasioned by inadequate awareness about the symptoms and emergency care of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) among the healthcare workers. Improvement in health outcomes among patient with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

The solution would be training of health workers, development of protocols and guidelines and improvement of hospital diagnostic capabilities for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Program Goal Statement

To reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) in Uganda

Long Term Outcome Smart Objective

To improve the treatment and timely referral for patients with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) in hospitals in the Kampala Metropolitan Area by end of 2017
